Description

The scandalous secret of my grandmother, Nanny, is one that she guarded and denied until the very end. When my mother began asking for recipes for this very website, my grandmother would ignore the request for this recipe and even say she sent the recipe. When pushed grandmother would change ingredients or change quantities of ingredients and never actually acknowledged that this was her method. I have coined this behavior as "southern women games" where southern women would protect their pride and cooking prowess by altering or changing the recipe. Unfortunately, southern women games are not unique to my family. Instead my mother just watched Nanny make the pot roast. Here is the easiest best tasting pot roast that is exactly my grandmother's recipe, and it warms my soul every time I make it.

Ingredients
    Pot roast
  • 2 pounds Beef
  • 1 ounce Onion soup mix (1 pounch, lipton pouches are 1 oz by weight per package.)
  • 16 ounces Beef stock (Bone broth, beef stock ect. 16 OZ by volume is one cardboard container)
  • 16 ounces Water (This is bring down the flavor of the beef stock as well as make the recipe cheaper)
Instructions
  1. Put it in the crockpot in the morning

Before work throw everything into the crockpot.

    1. Beef first
    2. Beef stock and Water in equal ratios to cover the top of the beef
    3. Onion soup mix
  2. 30 Minutes before dinner

Sift in 1/4 cup flour while stirring the juices, and let sit. Don't worry too much about flour lumps the small ones will dissolve as it thickens up.

    1. My wife's grandmother, a yankee, also made her pot roast this way, but removed some juice in a large measuring cup and added the flour with a whisk. then returned the whisked gravy back to the crockpot to finish out the 30 minutes.
