Choosing a Pumpkin
When choosing a pumpkin, you must consider the ultimate use of the pumpkin. The large pumpkins bred for jack-o-lanterns are not the best pumpkins for pie making. For cooking purposes, choose a pumpkin bred for pie making, or choose a small dense pumpkin. The meat of a small pumpkin will be less fibrous and definitely better eating.
Keeping your Jack-o-lantern Fresh
There is nothing worse than a pooped pumpkin on Halloween. To keep your pumpkin fresh brush a commercially prepared fruit anti-browning solution over cut surfaces, or make your own solution by mixing: 2 Tablespoons vinegar, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, and 1 quart of water.
