Easy Southern Cooking/ Apple Butter Recipe

Apple Butter

1 gallon sweet apple cider
2 ½ quarts apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 cups sugar
¼ teaspoon whole allspice
1 3 inch stick cinnamon
3 to 4 whole cloves
Hot sterilized jars and lids

  1. Boil cider in an open kettle until reduced by half. 
  2. Add the apples and spices.  Cook rapidly, stirring frequently until the apples are soft.  Then reduce heat and cook slowly, stirring constantly.
  3. When mixture begins to thicken, add the sugar.  Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture is very smooth and thick enough to spread.
  4. Pour immediately into hot sterilized jars and seal.
